Wire ropes

steelwire_smWire ropes are constructed from galvanized steel wires of high resistance (130 up to 180kp/mm2). Many wires after helically coiled round the central core, the named "matrix" which is from cedrus hempen rope, forming bundles called "pistons"  or ply/strand.

The number of the wires in each piston varies (7, 12, 19, 24, 30, 37 and 61). Many bundles, pistons, usually 6 (to 8) after re maneuvered around a cedrus hempen rope, called "matrix piston" forming the multistrand cable, known as wire rope. The wire ropes are also constructed with 7 or 8 pistons but rarely with 9. The "matrix piston" does not increase the resistance but contributes to flexibility the maintenace of the shape and the lubrication of the wire rope. The more wires  the piston consists, so much more flexible the wire rope is.

According to the rotation of the bundles we discren  clocwise and anti-clockwise wire ropes. The thickness  of wires varies from 0.4.. to 2.4mm for cable's flexibility. The matrix of the piston can also be made from another natural or synthetic material.

During the construction of the wire ropes there are 3 ways that can be followed:

  • a) As in the ropes, wires are twisted to the left and the composed pistons to the right for the clockwise wire ropes, in conclusion this anti-clockwise contruction is the most widespread .
  • b) Both the wires and the composed of them pistons, are twisted in this way, that is to the right or to the left, and
  • c) Every piston spirally twisted on advance before connecting to the other pistons for the constitution of the wire rope.
